Private Online Tutoring

Ahead of the Curve Tutoring is here to help students and parents navigate through the new online school platforms by offering distance learning support during the Covid-19 Pandemic. School looks a lot different this year, and more than ever students will need extra support. This year students will find themselves with less time with their teachers online. School days have less hours and are filled with more independent study time. Students will be responsible for learning more material on their own, and this can be a challenge for many.

San Diego Unified School District plans to structure 180 minutes or 3 hours of direct teaching each day. This is only half of a regular in person school day. Students will have half of the amount of instruction, but 100% of the same material to cover. For more detailed information on San Diego Unified School District’s distancing learning plan, check out their Back to School Guide.

This can be a stressful time for students and parents as well. By having distance learning support from one of our experienced tutors, students will have the one-on-one time to ask questions and review concepts that were missed during the zoom meetings.

Many students find it difficult to pay attention during a zoom class. It is nearly impossible for teachers to keep track of each student while on a zoom call. With one-on-one tutoring, the tutor can make sure each student is focused and getting the information he or she needs. Distance learning support will insure your child gets the education they deserve.

For more information on our tutoring services please fill out the request form here or email/call us at Michelle@AheadOfTheCurveTutoring.com (818)-219-8003.

Let us help you navigate the new normal.

The New Integrated Math

Ahead of the Curve Tutoring offers integrated math tutoring in San Diego for students of all levels. Recently, the mathematical curriculum was drastically changed. Students used to follow the standard pre-algebra, algebra I, geometry, algebra II path through high school. Now each subject is integrated into courses called Math 1, Math 2, Math 3 and so forth. Now students learn the basics of all areas of math at once, no longer separating algebra from geometry. This way the learning is continuous, but it poses new challenges for students.

Getting to Calculus

The new Integrated Math structure still allows students to reach calculus, but in a new way. Currently, students will take Integrate Math 1 freshman year, Intergrated Math 2 sophomore year, Integrated Math 3 junior year, then Trig/Pre-Calc senior year. But where is Calculus? In order to take the class that is very important to take for acceptance to competitive colleges, students must now test out of a class and skip it. The first opportunity comes after 8th grade before starting high school. Students will be given the opportunity to take an accelerated assessment test to skip Integrated Math 1 and go straight to Integrated Math 2. There is one other opportunity to take the accelerated assessment test at the end of Integrated Math 3, allowing students to skip Pre-Calculus and move right into Calculus. This skip is a bit more challenging, but allows students another shot at Calculus before college.

Tutoring Services

Our tutors are experts of all areas of mathematics, not only specializing in one particular class. This way we can insure that our tutors deliver the best integrated math tutoring in San Diego. We look for tutors who do not just tutored algebra but also geometry, statistics, and calculus. These are the types of tutors necessary for success in integrated math classes. It is important for students to get the help they need and not to fall behind. Now each math course builds upon the previous one, so good understanding is imperative. Our tutors can help your child get a head start and pass the accelerated assessment allowing them to take Calculus in high school. This is highly recommended by the leading universities in the nation, but can be a real struggle for many students. Let Ahead of the Curve Tutoring help your child reach their full potential.

How You Can Help Your Child

If your child is struggling in their integrated math course, or just needs a little help to better understand the topics, or wants to get into a competitive university and wants to reach Calculus, please email us today and we will be happy to get your child setup with the right tutor. We are offering back to school special rates from now until September 21st for new and returning students. Contact us Here or email Michelle@AheadoftheCurveTutoring.com.

The new reformatted SAT test is here for 2016, and so are our prep courses. The first new test will be held on March 5th, and there are lots of changes being made. Ahead of the Curve Tutoring has Prep Courses for the new SAT to prepare students for the exam. We have been getting ready for this switch and adjusting teaching methods to fit the test.

There have been some drastic changes to the format and scoring of the New SAT Test. For starters, there is no longer a penalty for guessing. In the past we encourage students only to guess when they can eliminate 2 or more answers, but now that is not the case. Another big change comes with the essay, which is now an optional part of the exam. There are also new types of questions in the Reading Comprehension section. These are just a few of the changes being made. Ahead of the Curve Tutors know all of the new tips and tricks to help students do their very best. To see more about the specific changes to the New SAT visit this link: New SAT vs. Old SAT.

It is important to start studying early for the New SAT. The more practice tests a student can take the better. Ahead of the Curve Tutoring has multiple prep courses to fit every student’s needs. Prep courses for the new SAT include weekly homework assignment, multiple practice exams, and session work. Each course is tailored to individual students needs and goals. We work with multiple books and materials, which are all provided with each package. Let us help your child do his or her best on the New SAT Test. Please visit out contact page here .

As a San Diego math tutor myself, I use this trick to divide numbers quickly, and without the use of a calculator. This short lesson will allow you to make fast educated guesses. In this article, we will go over the easy number tricks. I can honestly say that I use these every single day.

Number 1 – All numbers are divisible by 1.

Number 2 – All even numbers are divisible by 2.

Number 3 - If you add up all the digits in a number, and the result is divisible by 3, then the number is as well. Example 342. 3+4+2=9 And since 9 is divisible by 3, so is 342. 342/3=114

Number 4 – If the last two digits of a number is divisible by 4, then so is the number. Example: 232 since 32 is divisible by 4 so is 232. And 232/4=58

Number 5 – If the number ends in a 0 or a 5, then the number is divisible by 5.

Number 6 - If a number is divisible by 2 and 3, then it is divisible by 6. You just need to combine rules 2 and 3. Example 42. Since it is even it is divisible by 2. Since 4+2= 6 and 6 is divisible by 3, then 42 is divisible by 6. And 42/6=7.

Number 9 – If the sum of the digits is divisible by 9, then the number is divisible by 9. Example 5,256. Since 5+2+5+6=18, and 18 is divisible by 9. 5,256 is divisible by 9. 5,256/9=584.

Numbers 7, and 8 are a bit more complicated, and we will save them for another time. I hope this trick of a San Diego math tutor, will help you do more mental math not only is school, but in your everyday life. Look for more tips and tricks every week from your San Diego math tutor at AheadoftheCurveTutoring.com

Don’t Worry Fractions Are Friendly

Many students seem to be intimidated whenever fractions are involved. The fractions tend to scare them off before they even begin. The trick is to really remember that fractions are just a number and nothing more. There are a few helpful math fraction tips and rules to remember when solving problems that contain fractions.

1. In order to add fractions, their denominators must be equal.

example: 1/2 + 1/3

(3/3) * 1/2 +(2/2) * 1/3 we find the common denominator is 6

3/6 + 2/6 now both fractions can be added

= 5/6 we obtain the final answer

2. When multiplying fractions it is helpful to cancel like terms and factor whenever possible.

example: (2x^3)/10 * 5/(4x)

( x^2/10) * (5/2) the 2x^3 canceled with the 4x

(x^2/2) * (1/2) 5 is a factor of both 5 and 10

(x^2/4) finally we multiple the simple remaining equations

3. When trying to solve for a variable where two fractions are set equal to each other, you can cross multiply as a short cut.

example: (3x/5)=(6/10)

30x = 30 we cross multiply to obtain the equation

x=30/30 we divide by 30 to get x be itself

x=1                       we obtain the solution

4. Dividing a number by a fraction is the same as multiplying by its reciprocal.

example: 3/2 ÷ 1/4

3/2 × 4/1 dividing by 1/4 is the same as multiplying by 4/1 or 4.

12/2 we multiply across top and bottom

6 we obtain the final answer.

Remembering these simple fractions tips will make them all that much easier to handle. The student needs to understand there is nothing scary about fractions at all. These are just a few simple rules to follow. There is still more fraction tips to come. If you want to practice your fraction skills and need to check your work here is an online fraction calculator www.helpwithfractions.com/fraction-calculator Keep learning!

About Us

Ahead of the Curve tutoring services was founded by a local San Diego tutor, who knows the real process behind teaching students. As a tutor, it is not just about how well you know the subject you are teaching, but also how well you know the student you are teaching it to. After practicing as a private tutor for over eight years, the idea to turn this working knowledge and experience into a business was born. The mission is to provide students in San Diego with the best one-on-one, academic help from someone they can build a strong and trusting relationship with. We know that each student is different and requires a personalized tutoring program that is built around their individual needs and skill level. Ahead of the Curve Tutoring not only assigns students the most qualified tutors, but also someone they can feel comfortable talking to and learning from. This is when true success is achieved and students become Ahead of the Curve.

Our tutors

At Ahead of the Curve Tutoring, you can be assured that all of our tutors are either college graduates or currently enrolled at a university. This way we provide a higher level of service and professionalism to our clients. Each of our tutors are screened before hire to ensure only the most qualified tutors are selected to join our team and work with your child. We look for passionate educators in San Diego that truly want to make a difference in a student’s life. Our tutors are true experts of their subjects. They are personable and kind people you will enjoy working with for a long time to come.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are the answers to some our most frequently asked questions. If you need any other information, we encourage you to call us as 818-219-8003 or email us at Michelle@AheadoftheCurveTutoring.

How do I get started?

To get started simply fill out the contact information under the contact us section, or give us a call at 818-219-8003. As soon as we gather some information about your child such as grade level and subject area, and location, we will provide you with an excellent tutor based on his or her individual needs.

What times and days are your tutors available?

Tutoring can take place on any day of the week, in the morning, afternoon, or evening. We will find you a tutor who is available the specific days and times you request. This way we can accommodate any family’s needs and schedules.

What if I need to change the schedule?

If you need to make a permanent adjustment to your tutoring schedule, simply discuss the new days and times with your tutor. If he or she is unable to work those days, just give us a call at 818-219-8003, and we will provide you with another tutor who can.

What are your rates for tutoring?

We have different packages based on the number of hours per week, students personal needs and student grade levels. The more hours you buy the more each hour will go down in price. We also work with a family’s individual needs. To find out more information or to get a quote, you can send an email to Michelle@AheadoftheCurveTutoring.com or call us at 818-219-8003.

Where will the tutoring take place?

Tutoring will take place in your home at the agreed upon time. You may choose to have tutoring take place at another public location such as a school, library, or coffee shop, as long as you and your tutor both agree upon so.

What if my child cannot make a tutoring session or will be late?

That is no problem at all. Just notify your tutor by 10am the day of the scheduled lesson without any charge. If you are unable to do so, you will be charged for the hour as planned. If your child will be late for a lesson, our tutors are happy to wait. However, the waiting time will count as part of the hour.

Do you have a guarantee?

We promise to provide your child with an outstanding tutor. If at anytime you are unsatisfied with your tutor for any reason, we will set you up with another tutor right away. We want your child to get the most out of each lesson, and we will work with you until you are satisfied.

Do hours ever expire?

No. The hours you purchase will never expire and may be used for any subject your child needs tutoring in, now and in the future. Also as stated above, if your child no longer needs lessons, and you still have hours leftover, you may request a refund of the unused hours.

How does a refund work?

You can request a refund of any unused hours for up to one year from the purchase date. For example, if you bought 16 hours and only used 12, you would be billed for 12 hours at the 8 our package price. The remainder would then be refunded to you.

Is there any long term contract?

There is no long term contract at Ahead of the Curve Tutoring. You can stop tutoring at any time, and all unused hours will be refunded for up to a year from the purchase date.
